Poverty

Poverty is an economic and social state characterised by deprivation of financial resources and common necessities such as food, shelter and clothing that are essential for adequate standard of living. Definition of the term may vary, but generally, poverty is defined as the lack of income, money or financial resources to buy or to afford access to daily life necessities. In most countries and region, the measure of poverty includes education, health and access to necessary utilities such as water and electricity.

World Bank’s 2008 World Development Indicator showed that 80% of the world’ population lives on less than $10 a day. UNICEF also identified that 26,500 to 30,000 numbers of children die everyday because of poverty. These data indicate that poverty is a global issue facing all the economies of the world, and that no society or country is free from it. From the developed countries of the West to the developing countries of the East, poverty is a common economic and social facet.
